Joel Ratnasothy

Surgeon turned technologist. I build software for the public sector.

I spent over a decade in medicine before moving into technology. I've built regulated health software for the NHS, worked inside a major system integrator and a Microsoft subsidiary, and founded and sold a health technology company. I'm now building something new.

As a country, I believe we need to fundamentally reorganise how we deliver our healthcare, education and social justice. The fundamental idea behind these posts is this: the performance of our public sector is determined by the design of the system, not by the talent or effort of the people within it. Until we redesign our policies, incentives, and the structures that govern how our public services and citizens interact, we will keep getting the same results regardless of how good our intentions, or how much money we throw at the problem.

Will try and write about this every week. The essays cover my experience of organisational design, group behaviours, procurement, lessons from building regulated software and why we need a new digital social contract.
